A knife or other cutting implement is used to cut vegetables, fruit, and potatoes down to size or model them into shapes. After washing and peeling the product, these are the first steps you take to make a product edible. In some cases, cutting an ingredient into wafer-thin slices is enough to make it edible. Just think of red beets which you can never eat raw as it is; it becomes edible when you cut it into wafer-thin slices. It is essential to master cutting techniques as it largely determines the final result of a component or dish.
