Butterhead lettuce is one of the best known and most popular types of lettuce in the Netherlands. It has a soft buttery, spicy flavour and consists of a closed head of large, broad leaves. In the middle of its juicy green leaves is a soft succulent heart. A total of around 120 hectares of lettuce can be found growing in greenhouses in the Netherlands. From May to June, butterhead lettuce is harvested from open fields, and in the other months it is grown in greenhouses.
