Rice is a staple food for much of the world's population, especially in warmer regions. The average annual rice consumption in the world is 56 kilograms per capita. The cultivation of rice was started by farmers in South Korea. These days, China is the largest producer and consumer of rice and Thailand the largest exporter. More than 400 million tonnes of rice are produced each year.
