Pineapples originally come from the tropical, but dry, region of South America. A pineapple consists of spirals of 100 to 200 separate seedless fruits that fuse together around a central core. The fruits around the base develop first, and these are the oldest and sweetest. At their best, pineapples have a sweet and sour flavour. They go perfectly well with the flavours of butter and caramel and their firm flesh makes them suitable for grilling.
